Jealous
“So who is this guy exactly?” his voice came from the living room.
You got the popcorn out of the microwave and poured it into a bowl, giving it a shake before leaving the kitchen. You popped a kernel into your mouth as you sat next to him on the sofa and grabbed the remote, ready to start the movie. He shot you a glare, growing impatient as you took your time chewing. You gulped the popcorn down and finally answered his question.
“He’s this guy I work with. He’s really nice so I figured I’d give it a chance” you replied nonchalantly.
Truthfully you weren’t interested in him. The one that you were growing attached to was sitting there on the couch next to you - your best guy friend. You figured he didn’t share the same feelings you did though and so you kept your heart to yourself in order to protect your friendship, which meant the world to you. It was better to have him as a friend, and be close to him this way, than to lose him all together. That’s the reason why you accepted your co-worker’s offer when he asked you out on a date. You figured there was no harm in testing the waters.
“Is he trustworthy? You’re not going to be completely alone with him, are you?” he continued to banter, throwing question after question about the date at you.
“Yah! We’re supposed to be watching the movie. It’s movie night! Besides, why does it matter anyways?” you shoved him a little, pointing towards the television to signal the beginning of the film. He gave a soft laugh and then remained quiet for the rest of the night. The movie ended and you snorted at the cheesy plot.
“That was dumb” you laughed, looking over at him awaiting his opinion of the movie. He just gave you a small smile and nodded before telling you he had to go because he’d have to wake up early the next day for practice.
Things seemed a little off when you hugged and bid your goodbyes for the night but you brushed it off.

You were frantically wandering around your apartment trying to find the dress you had in mind to wear for the date. You were becoming a bit anxious as you could not remember where you had last left it but then it dawned on you. You let one of your girl friends borrow it a few weeks back and had forgotten to get it from her on the weekend. You let out a frustrated sigh and plopped yourself down on the sofa, letting your head fall. You began to think of him again and ruffled your hands through your hair, frustrated once again.
Suddenly, there was a knock at the door. Your heart jumped. Was it your date? Did he come early? You ran to the door and hesitantly opened it. He was standing there and you grew a little happy - whether it was because it was him or because it wasn’t your date, you weren’t sure.
“Did you forget something last night?” you asked, looking around the apartment to see if anything of his was lying around.
“Is your date tonight?” he asked you, completely dismissing your question.
“______, we went over this last night. Weren’t you listening to me? Yeah, it’s tonight. In a few hours actually - so I don’t have time to waste” you called from the bedroom, as you began looking through your jewelery box to find your favourite rose gold bracelet.
“So, are you saying that me coming over is a waste of time?” his voice came from the living room. You could tell he was slightly irritated even though he tried to pass it off as a joke. Normally, he would know you didn’t mean it that way.
“Mwo? Well, I’m just saying your kind of setting me back a little while I’m trying to get ready.” You replied, pulling your bracelet over your hand - the cool metal hitting your skin but quickly warming from the heat radiating from your body.
“Is this how it’s going to be from now on?” his voice was rough.
“What are you talking about?” you asked, walking out of the bedroom and shooting him an inquisitive glare unsure of what he was getting at with this conversation.
“You get a boyfriend and suddenly your best friend is unimportant” his voice had an angry sting in it which hurt you and angered you at the same time.
“It’s only the first date and you know I wouldn’t do that” your voice began to raise as the frustration overtook you.
“That’s what they all say” he sneered. You couldn’t take it anymore, you were hurt by his accusations and angry that he thought so little of you.
“Why do you care anyways? I’m nothing to you!” you screamed as tears began to fill your eyes. You didn’t care about the stupid date and now it seemed as though you were losing the one person you tried so hard to hold on to.
A tear rolled down your cheek and you turned around quickly wiping it away. When you had composed yourself you turned back in his direction, sniffling.
“I think you should leave now” your voice was soft, almost a whisper
“I have to get ready for my date” you continued, and began making your way towards your bedroom, you couldn’t look at him any longer - it only made your heart ache even more.
As you walked away you felt a tug on your hand and suddenly you were whipped around. He wrapped his arms around you, pressing you into his chest. His embrace did not comfort you but instead reminded you of what you couldn’t have and once again the tears began to fall. You tried to push him off of you but he only held you tighter.
“I’m sorry, ______” he whispered. His voice seemed almost pained and you stopped fighting his embrace.
“The truth is…” he began, but stopped and let go of you. He placed his hands on your shoulders and looked you directly in the eye. His face held a determined expression and you both stood in silence for a moment.
“The truth is, I’m jealous” his voice was soft this time and you weren’t sure if you had heard him correctly.
“Mwo?” you leaned closer, a confused expression evident on your face.
“Why would you be jealous?” you asked, trying to confirm what you heard.
“because ______, I want to be the one to take you on a date. I want to be the only one who gets to hold your hand and kiss your lips and …” he trailed off and looked out the window of the apartment. You both stood, silently, for what seemed like forever. You stared at him shocked and processing everything he had just said. He was still looking out the window and you searched his face trying to figure out what he was thinking. Suddenly your thoughts became clear.
“Then kiss me” you said softly, stepping towards him. His gaze shot back to you, searching your eyes - trying to figure out what you were thinking. You gave a slight nod and he stepped towards you.
He cupped his hand around your face and slowly moved his face closer. Your heart raced in your chest and when you finally felt his lips against yours, your body felt like jelly. You melted into the kiss and smiled when you realized that everything you had ever wanted was finally yours.
